ILP #1 - Design (Edmodo)

For my independent learning project, I decided to make an Edmodo group. I used Edmodo in most of my classes throughout high school, so I thought it would be a good idea to learn how to use it from the other side (as a teacher.) In this project, I decided to be a 5th-grade math teacher. I made a review of tree diagrams by finding a Prezi that another teacher made (which was tagged as reusable) and linked it to my Edmodo group so my students could "learn in different ways and hear another teacher's methods." It was supposed to be a review of content that was covered in class. I also posted a worksheet that had my students creating their own tree diagrams based on word problems. Additionally, I posted a review of adding fractions with unlike denominators (standard 5.NF.1.) I used the snapshot tool on Edmodo, which I thought was one of the coolest tools available to teachers. When I opened the snapshot tool, I entered the following information: grade, standard, math or language arts. After I entered my info, Edmodo created a short quiz (intended to be a review quiz) of fractions with unlike denominators for me. As students take it, it will show which types of problems they know better than others and will show me which standards I have taught well, and which should be retaught. This is a tool that I will definitely be using in the future.

  1. Hey Allison!
Great job with your 5th grade Edmodo website! I think adding a header to your page will help brighten it a little bit (Edmodo, as a website, can be so plain sometimes). I also think that adding a personal photo will make it easier for your students to feel connected with you when they are using this website. The prezi and video that you added to your website were very helpful, but I attached a link of other ways that you can use Edmodo as a teacher (sorry about the lack of hyperlink, pretty sure you can't do that in comments)

Keep up the good work! Can't wait to see more of things you do with Edmodo and your next Independent Learning Project!

  2. I was first introduced to Edmodo in this class, and am still understanding it. So I think that it's awesome you are able to extend your expertise as a student using this website to being on the other side as a teacher! Your worksheet, Prezi, and reminder post are amazing! However I tried clicking on the snapshot, and it keeps redirecting me to go different places. Maybe you could just clarify what exactly to do with the snapshot. Other than that, You have really inspired me to master this website as well, as I see how extremely useful it can be. I can't wait for you to use it in real life either! Also, just wondering, is this only for students? Or is there a parent log in as well?

    1. Thanks for the comment, Tina! I think the snapshot tool may only be visible if you have a student account and are a member of my class (we all have teacher accounts!) Basically, the snapshot tool shows the teacher how well the students in the class have mastered the content in the quiz, and what else you should re-teach. Edmodo is primarily for students and their teacher, but teachers can make it accessible for parents as well, with a parent group code where they can view the group!
